ellenmillion: Flying raven artwork (fly #JanuRaven)

Sea Monster Month was originally a thing we did at Torn World (a shared world that I ran with many wonderful creative people that had giant snowy unicorns, flying cats, and sea monsters). The original Sea Monster Month was in May, but when I decided I needed to use it as an art card challenge for myself, I didn't want to put it back-to-back with Junicorn.

I really had fun with these. I knew that I had a very busy month in April, so I purposefully didn't let myself get wrapped up in making perfect or complicated cards, and I even used the same general compositions a few times. I just wanted to capture the essence of sea monster... and I also wanted to play with media that I love but don't use a lot. I worked up some of the these backgrounds in advance - many of the acrylic ones came from projects that I did YEARS ago that never felt finished. (Clearly, they needed sea monsters.)

I learned a lot about technique, just by playing with markers and letting myself be loose. No pre-sketches, which is very unlike me! The watercolor-looking artcards are Copic alcohol markers, the acrylics were Posca paint markers (I use these for ornaments and absolutely love them) over acrylic painted canvas (well, mostly canvas).

Prices are $10 and $15 for originals! Prints are $5 each or 3 for $10. (All shipping, including international, included in these prices.)

I am not doing an art challenge in May, but I will be back in June with Junicorn! (My seventh year of it!)

The Kickstarter is done and went well - we ended up over 3x the goal and got all of our stretch goals, including this piece of artwork as a Kickstarter-only bonus page:

This was MEANT to be a random, generic lion shifter for my next coloring book when I first started on it, but it was totally Graham. (Of Shifting Sands)

I've also released this piece, that I've been just dying to share, but I didn't want to confuse the Kickstarter, because this is NOT in Splendrix.

This tragically handsome guy is Justin, star of Spy Snow Leopard: mybook.to/SpySnowLeopard - it is a Zoe book, but not MY Zoe book. I didn't write this one, but it's a fantastic book - lots of hurt/comfort and healing and people overcoming guilt and doubt. There are also food scenes that will make you honest-to-god drool. It is temporarily priced at $0.99, but only for another day!

In other things, Kindergarten comes to a close WAY too soon, I've approved the coloring books for printing, these are the VERY LAST coloring books I will be printing myself, and it has snowed three times in the last week and I am so very over winter.

April was amazing. And weird. And I feel like there were a lot of things I could have done better, but overall, it was good. If busy.

May looks no less busy.

Also: SEA MONSTER MONTH! I haven't decided what I'll do this year! Should I do sketch cards? I want to do a field guide to the sea monsters of Torn World, in print, but I fear that's too much to bite off as a whole, so I'm thinking I'll start working on this with the aim of releasing it NEXT sea monster month. Muse Fusion is next week!

Wheeee...
ellenmillion: (Default)
Have you missed some of my creative updates over the last month? I'm doing monthly roundups to try to keep some sense in the chaos!

Artwork

I only did two sketches for the May Sketch Fest, but both of them spanned into full coloring pages that I released at Torn World for Sea Monster Month. Arguing Over Dinner also became my Patreon perk:

I also did this one: http://www.tornworld.net/artpageview.php?id=554

At Muse Fusion, I did this painting:

I also did two sketches that didn't go anywhere, and two sketches I finished into coloring pages! http://www.tornworld.net/artpageview.php?id=553 and http://www.tornworld.net/artpageview.php?id=552

And, miraculously, finished this painting that I started last year:

I also did this for a client:

In total, 4 complex coloring pages from sketch to finish, another inked piece, a teeny painting, and I finished a giant painting. Go, me!

I set a goal of 500 words/day, which I didn't quite meet, but I did get a little over 10,000 words written, which is a LOT for me!

Sea Monster Month drew to a close yesterday, and this was my last contribution to it:

Original available. Download available in my Etsy shop. It's also available to any Torn World subscriber!

Guppy and I had an insanely busy day. I went to the gym, trepidatiously, and it worked out PERFECTLY. I feared the worst when she clung to me as I was leaving, but I peeked in a few times, as she discovered that the play microwave went BEEP and was beeping it, and then she made a friend and when I checked in again, they were playing happily in the house. So I did a pretty long workout, took a long steam and shower, and then had 30 minutes of earphones-in art time in the cafe. HEAVENLY. I got my first #junicorn piece finished, and will have a landing post about that shortly!

(Because it's June already, what?! My garden, now that I've removed the tasty bits out of reach, flourishes. We had chicken tarragon salad with tarragon that grew back in our garden, and the delphiniums have declared this their year and have sent out scouts. The columbine came back, and has a few buds just starting, and the chives are monstrous already. No potato shoots yet.)

After the gym, the plan was to go food shopping, but we were about halfway through lunch at the grocery when Jake called and said 'come for a walk!' It was the perfect day for a hike at Creamer's Field, so we did that. THEN the shopping, and some other shopping, and a little extra shopping, then we got water, and there was no quiet time today. (So no writing. Alas.) After grilling the chicked for the salad, we made another trip into town to get lightbulbs and water a friend's garden and get another load of water.

We saw baby ducks, and a chickadee nest, and we got strawberries and dinner was amazing, so the day as a whole was a success.

I have new sea monster artwork up at Torn World!

You can find this - and several other sea monster coloring pages - available for download at my Etsy shop!

Young monster has been especially monstery this morning, but we went to the park for a short visit anyway. It was very cold, and we didn't stay long. Now she's being quiet in her room, and I'm going to try to get some words written. I fell off my 500 words/day wagon very severely last week, and only have two days left in the month, so I probably won't get caught up! But words are still words, so I'm going to do what I can.

I am also thinking ahead to next month, and in particular, #junicorn. I would really like to do that again.

But first, words! And a cup of hot tea, because it's COLD and I'm crabby about it.
ellenmillion: (Default)
It's been a very lovely birthday weekend, even if it didn't end up going the way we had planned. We started building on our woodshed! I am looking forward to having a nice shelter for my warmth-making. No more wrestling of blue tarps and shoveling of snow off of wood! This is going to be our summer improvement project, and we've done all the design and bought the foundation pieces. Half of the concrete blocks are laid - which involved a lot of digging and leveling. Then it started gusting and drizzling, which spelled the end of the work for the day.

We will celebrate the holiday with a little solemn memory and delicious grilled meat.

Speaking of holidays, Sea Monster Month is quickly coming to a close, but I have art to release every day for the next few days:

Original available. Even barnacles are bigger in Torn World!

Now I think I will try to catch up on my monthly roundups, because that's about how much I have left in the way of brains...
ellenmillion: (Default)
The bastard voles have some kind of vendetta against my dill. They have been systematically chopping it down, but then just leaving the stalks on the ground in the garden, right next to the plant. I've harvested some of the fallen dill, but most of it wilts before I find it. I only have about a quarter of what I started with. FURRY LITTLE JERKS.

We visited a kindergarten open house today. Guppy mostly wanted to know when we were going to LEAVE, and refused to tell anyone her name or do much more than hide behind me. Then we went to the park and had a lunch playdate, which went remarkably well. I carved most of another spoon.

I also managed to lose a bunch of info out of the Torn World database (the stories/poetry field only), and my backup won't restore. So I'm fairly tooth-gnashy about that. There aren't very many pieces affected, but enough that doing line-by-line fixes is going to be a headache.

But here, have some new artwork!

You can get this as a coloring page as a subscriber at Torn World (starting at $5/month): http://www.tornworld.net/artpageview.php?id=548
Or as a Patreon patron (starting at $1/month): https://www.patreon.com/ellenmillion
Or as a download at Etsy ($2): https://www.etsy.com/listing/531514167/arguing-over-dinner-sea-monster-battle (special sea monster month price!)
The original (9x12) is available for $200, or half price for Patreon patrons.

I also got my writing goal in, +43 words. Need to send a commissionee a revised sketch, and eat cherries on the porch with the daughter.

I have been scarce! I will be scarcer until next week! All is good, but very, very busy. I will have artwork and stories and photos... when I have moments to spare to put them all in cohesive order.

This is from last year's sea monster month, now posted at Torn World:

I have new artwork up!

I did this last year for the From the Deep coloring book, but this is the first time I've officially released it.

I made a marvelous, if slightly complex crowdfunding project for the painting I want to do for this year's sea monster month, with points and prizes and stretch goals, but... oof. I'm tired! I feel like I just squeezed everyone for funds for coloring books, and I've got a lot to do right now. So, instead of doing a big crowdfunding project for it, I'm just going to do a painting, all for fun. Patreon patrons get to help me decide what it will be, and that's the extent of the participation portion. I'll have prints available at the end, and maybe an original!

It will be one of these pieces, and that's all I know so far:

In other painting news:

Locals! I have a heat press I'm selling - PM or email if you'd like details!
ellenmillion: (fairysquash)
Listening to my favorite music* at FULL BLAST because there is no one else in the house: a luxury I haven't enjoyed in... I can't remember when.

Getting orders out - PA portraits and some print service stuff. I'll have to make another trip in to restock one of the local bookstores tomorrow. My list in general is a little boggling, ranging from paperwork to shoveling dog poop. My inbox is a disaster.

But tonight I'm going to go out for dinner and a movie, and I just registered for a painting class at Chena Hot Springs next weekend that I've been waffling over for a while. A whole two days on my own, focused on watercolor painting! (And soaking in the hot pool.) With that in mind, I can handle ANYTHING!

Sea Monster packages now! RARH!

Today is the last day to add your sponsorship to the Sea Mosnter mini-coloring book! http://ellenmillion.livejournal.com/1515101.html

We are just $30.90 $10.90 $8.90 from a greeting card file for all sponsors to download - with a physical copy in every order of $15 or more.

I am sweating my way through an illustration with a deadline of tonight (cupcake roses... because regular roses weren't difficult enough...), and then I will have four more sea monster pages to finish for you - here is one posted last week:

Deadline now!
ellenmillion: (Number 1 Dog Ribbon)
I'm having an awesome birthday.

I baked a sea monster apple pie yesterday:

And today I made granola and interviewed a new neighborhood girl (and her Mom interviewed me :P) for watching Guppy. (I think both of the girls will work out great, and overlap nicely in terms of availability.) Guppy was shy and terrible by turns, so they know what they're getting into and are willing to come back.

I also released a coloring book today, through the 78 Tarot Nautical Kickstarter (where it has been gleefully received!), and Kayti made me a video (for backers!) that made me sniffle happily, AND my Sea Monster Mini-Coloring Book zoomed past it's commercial printing goal AND the next extra pages goal AND we're only $10.10 from an extra PDF of the sea monster scale chart for everyone and I'm going to have to come up with more amazing stretch goals. Plus, I got a few coloring book orders through Amazon.

There have been so many beautiful birthday wishes and kind messages. It's made my day.

Art to do during naptime (which is being resisted right now...), and for dinner, I have requested a bucket of fried chicken. My life, it is complete.

*puuuuurrrrrrrs*
ellenmillion: (Mmm..)
I'm sort of in weird limbo shock. I've got someone here watching Guppy for a few hours today, and I'm sitting here looking at my list of things to do trying to figure out... well, what to do. I think I will start with some music (I'm in the basement), move laundry around, and see if I can finish another coloring book page. There is giggling upstairs, so I will assume it is going well...

Here is a photo from this weekend, with gratuitous shot of the husbands 'fancy new car.' Happy birthday, sweetie. :)

About ready to order proofs of the Secret Project, which will be revealed TOMORROW!

Remember, that you've only got until Sunday to sponsor a monster as part of Sea Monster Month: http://ellenmillion.livejournal.com/1515101.html

Wheee!
ellenmillion: "thud" (thud)
I ran across another of those "15 Awesome coloring books for grownups!" articles that had a bunch of selections that I'm not impressed by (celebrities? really? Badly-drawn celebrities?) and was feeling discouraged, so I cleaned my house. I rolled up the winter mud rug and took out the wood holder and trimmed and watered the plants and got a load of laundry together (though I haven't actually started it yet because we had to run to swimming). I washed the dishes and picked up some of the corners that drift in with kids toys because they are out of the way, and filtered the coloring books (though I couldn't throw away the dog-eared Justice League coloring book because Guppy still loves it passionately). I scooped the catbox and swept and vacuumed.

And after that, we ran to swimming, and when I discovered that what I thought was a Clif Bar in the swimbag was only an empty wrapper, we decided to stop by Jake's work to crash his barbeque. (I had actually been invited, but it sounds cooler to say we crashed a party. And this blog is So. All. About. me being cool.)

Three plates of food and a 'bubble juice' later, I've got Guppy down for her nap and I can barely move from swimming and food coma.

I'm still a tad discouraged, but my house looks lovely, at least.

I've got two more sea monsters to draw for my mini-coloring book, and I've got the sketch finalized for my anthology illustration. I'm booked for a show tonight at the last minute (see you there, apparently, [livejournal.com profile] laylalawlor!) and will be selling coloring books to the geekiest of the locals: https://www.facebook.com/events/551958441609650/

Off to prep for that. At least my show prep is super easy these days. And everything at my table is $10, which makes things SO simple.
ellenmillion: (juggle)
I spent all of yesterday convinced it was Tuesday, which means I'm already a day behind on this week and I have deadlines breathing down my neck. Fortunately, practice means I've gotten faster at doing artwork, which is something I had actively despaired of. Also fortunately, one of my deadlines was pushed until the middle of next month. Thank goodness!

I did finish this (literal!) monster:

That puts me at 8 pictures for the sea monster mini-coloring book, and just two to go! Horrah!

The crowdfunding dribbles along - every order does add up, though, and we're about $70 from bookmarks in the $15+ sponsorships. Just $70 to the professional printing, which - have I mentioned once or twice? - I'd really like to get to. :)

http://ellenmillion.livejournal.com/1515101.html

I've also been leaning on the marketing machine - I designed a new postcard and made a big postcard order to go off to Kayti, who is organizing the 78 Tarot Kickstarter. I'm working on some adspace in a pagan magazine, and debating how teeny an ad will be effective:

Too teeny?

Speaking of Kickstarter, it is Kickstarter season, apparently. Here are a few you may be interested in:

Aaaaaand, Guppy is waking up - I have to get dressed asap and hustle us out of the house to do some time-critical errands and DEADLINES and all the stuff because today is Thursday, not Wednesday, and there is stuff to be done.

ETA: Since I put gardening in the subject, I have to follow through with actual news. My lilacs came back! I transplanted about 8 of them from my sister's yard, and all of them have healthy leaves coming in like crazy! Horrah! Also, what I thought was a strawberry was actually the delphinium propagating. Which surprised me because it was So Very Sad last year.
ellenmillion: (working hard)
I have so much to cover! I am positive I'm going to forget big chunks, and bore everyone to death with the rest.

The bullets point version:

*WE DON'T HAVE RADON. We got our test back and are an order of magnitude below the minimum action level. This is a huge relief. (Backstory: we failed the test twice and have gone to considerable expense and effort to mitigate.)

*We went swimming on Friday and Guppy loved it. She clung for only a few moments before kicking off on her own. It was my idea to leave, again!

*Sketch Fest was this weekend, and went swimmingly. I got 3 pieces done, and had [livejournal.com profile] laylalawlor over for lunch and sketching.

*I'm trying contacts again. They have single-day contacts now, which offends my desire to reuse and reduce trash, but fits my actual use patterns perfectly. I pretty much only wear them for swimming right now, but for that alone, they are worth every penny.

*Cavity filling was awful, but past now. Mouth is mostly healed from the ordeal. Had to order a nightguard because of clenching. Am much, much poorer now.

*I've got FIVE of the coloring books thumbnailed now. You can see them at the coloring book order page. http://ellenmilliongraphics.com/coloringbooks.php

*Sponsorships are trickling in for the Sea Monster Mini-coloring Book and we're down to $86.90 to get to professional printing. (And just $36.90 to get to the bookmark bonus!) I also made a better graphic to show how awesome some of the finished pages are:

I really feel good about the new pieces I'm doing for this - they are a challenge and turning out nicely. You know you need one. http://ellenmillion.livejournal.com/1515101.html

*I did tie dye this weekend with my friend M. and things turned out WONDERFULLY. New underpants and socks, horrah! I will provide photos. Eventually.

*Have to get Guppy up for eye appointment now. (Bring her in with you, they said. HAHAHAHA. Okay, then.)

A photo from the weekend. Penguin sleeper, peace boots, blue tutu, and a purple cape. It's SUPERGUPPY!

ellenmillion: (Mmm..)
I caught some kind of stomach bug on Mother's Day, so I've been dragging the last couple of days. Nothing terrifically awful, but I'm moving a lot slower than usual. Yesterday, I took a nap, and the day before I didn't scoop the catbox or vacuum, which are sure signs of the coming apocalypse.

My Sea Monster Mini-Coloring book project is creeeeeeping towards that magical $300 mark for professional printing. Just $40.90 to get bookmarks in all the $15+ sponsorships. Remember that you can spend your EMG or Torn World credits on this! PDFs start at just $2! http://ellenmillion.livejournal.com/1515101.html

I continue to slog along bit by bit in my slow world dominion plot - I've got an ad coming out in a major magazine, and I'm continuing to upgrade the ordering page little by little with the all-page thumbnails. I'm updating the Amazon order pages at the same time, and we'll see if that makes a difference.

A HUGE thank you for the Amazon reviews, by the way. You may think 'big deal,' but seriously, it is a 'BIG DEAL.' I do not think it is coincidence that the most reviewed titles are the most purchased, or that my Amazon purchases are going steadily up since those stars started showing up. (You can still leave reviews, here!)

Coordinating a morning on-site sitter for a few days a week this summer so I can hide in the basement and accomplish things. This is VERY exciting for me.

Now, some paperwork for pre-school registration, shopping, and I should work on some emails and ink this turtle. Oh, and a coloring book order that slipped in late last night, plus a trip to the PO for the orders I already packed up.
ellenmillion: (sea monster month)
I've got five sea monster coloring book pages finished, and 10 promised (so far!), but 8 sketches, so I have to decide which of the rest of these I'm going to finish. Help me pick!

A few notes:

I'm showing them all so you can get an idea of what will be included, and what might be included.

4,10,13,14, and 15 are finished. They are most likely to be included, but if I can, I'd like to replace 13 with a piece that doesn't have to be turned sideways.

1 is nearly finished, and I'm about to start inking 6, so I'm not including them in the poll.

So far, I'm heavy on deathfins and smartarms. I don't think this is a bad thing. :P I do wish I had a dreamskate sketch or two started.

So! Pick your favorites! You may choose up to five, or just your favorite one or two.

[Poll #2010793]
ellenmillion: (aahhhhhh)
I did not blog on Friday. I called the truck dealership about getting the power steering fixed (It was a serious workout parking that thing!) and they surprised me with an invitation to bring it right in. So, Guppy and I packed up a bag of tricks and went in to entertain the staff and salesmen by gallivanting about the showroom like a pair of loons. Once we had the diagnosis and time estimate (broken pump, 2 hours), we got a shuttle ride to the swimming pool!

And that was AWESOME.

Guppy hung onto me like a little barnacle at first, then accepted a floaty barbell and a vest, and was off on her own. At first she wanted to cling, then wanted at least a hand on her, then nothing - but I'd better stay close, and by the time we left, she was paddling off by herself and not at all bothered that I'd swim a few paces away to catch a ball and talk to her from across the lane. She even off-balanced once and dunked herself under - and after I got her back up on her barbell, I backed off again and she was just fine. We were in the pool for a little over an hour, and it was my idea to finally leave. That's at least double any previous pool time. The swimming teacher was there and very pleased with Guppy's progress. She says Guppy's ready for the big girl class! Horrah! We'll start that in June.

Swimming success!

Back to the dealer, to get a truck that turns without having to throw all my weight on the steering wheel, getting a load of water at the fillup station, and then home.

At the water fillup.

Our Friday evening adventure involved broken glass. Lots, and lots, and lots of broken glass. Guppy stood up in my chair and pushed over the floorlamp, which hit the ground with an amazing explosion and shattered the glass lamp from one end the living room to the other. There was glass in the kitchen, there was glass in the bathroom (the door was open). There was glass in the pile of Guppy's favorite blankets. There was glass under all of the chairs. There was glass ON the kitchen chairs. So then there was a lot of sweeping and vacuuming. Miraculously, the lamp still works, just needs a new glass bowl. When I yelled at Guppy to STAY IN THE CHAIR, she buried her head in her arms, then she sobbed at Jake, "I need a timeout."

Saturday, Jake took me out for Mother's Day dinner (a night early, to avoid the crowds). Guppy has gone from wailing inconsolably when I leave the room to pushing me out the door, demanding, "Can you go now?" Because Aunt R is WAY more fun than me.

My little girl is getting all independent and grown up. *sniffles* Also, she just got another one of her molars, and she is starting to refer to herself reliably as 'I' instead of 'Me.' I think last week's dose of extra monster was another mental level.

We had dinner at the Lemongrass, and we were going to go play mini-golf, but in getting ready to go, the topic of coats came up and I bemoaned my lack of a light-weight nice coat. I have a fabulous heavy coat - absolutely gorgeous, and utterly useless at temperatures above about 10 below. But for warmer weather, I have a lot of fun, casual (mostly worn-out) things, but nothing appropriate for a date night or dinner. Not that it matters a LOT in Fairbanks, mind you, but sometimes you like to look good.

So, instead of mini-golf, we ended up going coat shopping. I got a beautiful little peacoat, light grey, that should go with anything nice that I have, a moderate winter clearance coat to replace the one I wore out this winter, a pair of pants, and a sweater that I love to pieces. Shopping without a 3-year-old in tow is blissful. Best Mother's Day presents ever.

This morning, we got up and motivated, and started cutting ceiling boards for the bathroom. We've got it about 1/3 put up, along with insulation for sound protection from the bedroom, and another 1/3 cut, waiting for Guppy to get up from her nap to go up. They are cedar boards and not only does the bathroom ALREADY look an order of magnitude better, but it smells AMAZING.

Now, sea monster coloring pages! I have finished two of the sketches I started (one posted earlier as a Mother's Day freebie), and have a third nearly there. We are less than $100 to professional printing, and I'm really, really hoping we get there so I can make these generally available. :) http://ellenmillion.livejournal.com/1515101.html
